Wednesday Shorter Walks

"I love the wide open spaces of Dartmoor but need to build up my walking ability. Do you do any shorter/gentle walks?"

Name: Shorter Walks for Locals - Merrivale and the Quarries

Distance: 4 miles

Difficulty: Easy/moderate - gentle gradients, one stream crossing

Features: Prehistoric remains at Merrivale, T-A stones, old railway, London Bridge corbels, Swelltor and Foggintor quarries

Summary

Wednesday 6th July   Merrivale prehistoric site, Swelltor and Foggintor quarries

We start at Four Winds car park and walk past a couple of T-A stones making the old packhorse track to the stone rows, graves and standing stone at Merrivale.  We work our way down to the tinworkings and cross the Long Ash Brook, then walk up to join the old railway as it snakes around King's Tor, taking the branch off that leads up to the extensive ruins of Swelltor quarry.  We pick up the railway on the other side of the hill and return to our start point via picturesque Foggintor Quarry.

Cost of walk: £8.
